What Kind of Student Benefits from a BIS Degree?
If you need or want a 4-year, bachelor's degree, chances are that our new BIS Degree can help you.Specifically, UNC Pembroke's new BIS degree is designed for a special kind of student------someone who already has a 2-year, Associates degree in either applied arts or applied sciences. We realize that this new degree is not for everyone. More traditional students either get a standard Associates degree or start from scratch on a traditional BA or BS track. Such traditional students start their educations with heavy emphasis on ‘general education' core courses---the mainstay of a typical liberal arts education that ends with a BA or a BS.

With our BIS Degree, we're looking for a different kind of student: one who got a 2-year ‘vocational' degree earlier, but who needs the knowledge, practiced skills and credibility a 4-year full bachelor's degree provides. This kind of student will bring a wealth of Real-world experience to his or her studies and a maturity and sense of purpose often missing in the typical 18 year old freshman in traditional studies.
We incorporate the experience and maturity of students like you into the way we teach, understanding that what you bring to the classroom can contribute mightily to the learning experience for your classmates. To that end, we incorporate lots of actionable, real-life experience of our professors and your own experiences into our classroom teaching. Given that you'll be taking many of the ‘general education' courses that you missed the first time around, we'll help you learn that content in ways that make sense to you. Indeed, that's what we do in all our classes. UNC Pembroke is known as the place ‘where learning gets personal', and it certainly applies to the ways we approach our new BIS Degree.
Tell us what you need in a 4-year degree. We'll try to answer that need.

What does BIS mean?
The new BIS Degree at UNC Pembroke is a totally new kind of Bachelor's Degree-----in the same category as a Bachelor of Science (BS) or Bachelor of Arts (BA), but with a different focus.
This new degree is designed to confer a full 4-year degree for students
who gained what used to be called a ‘vocational' degree from a 2-year
institution. That degree is now called an Associates Degree in Applied Arts
or Sciences. This is the kind of degree gained by people who basically
wanted to learn a trade or a technical proficiency that could be
directly and immediately translated to an occupation. As such, holders
of these degrees took few general education courses and instead focused
on just the courses they needed to gain their chosen proficiency.
Today, these degree holders may be working in electronics, radio/TV
broadcasting, engineering, health services, paralegal work, culinary
arts, criminal justice, studio arts or occupational therapy, to name a
few fields.BIS stands for Bachelor in Interdisciplinary Studies. While most education is indeed interdisciplinary (cutting across standard educational categories), this degree gives credit toward a full bachelor's degree for courses that aren't usually part of a BA or BS degree. In short, we've created a degree that rewards you for the courses you took when a 4-year degree was the farthest thing from your mind. When you attain this UNC Pembroke degree, you will have completed all the general education degree work required as part of a standard BA or BS plus the course work required to make the most of your vocational work. In the end, you'll have a Bachelor's degree and it will give you the credentials you need or want in your work and personal life.
